As medical innovations grow exponentially, so does medical waste. The biggest threat of the growing medical waste issue in our environment is medication that is found inthe water supply. Pharmaceutical waste also negatively impacts the climate and can even be radioactive. According to a research study conducted by Mr. Abdullah Alshemari PhD, (School of Management, Faculty of Management, Law and Social Sciences, University of Bradford,) “The volume of pharmaceutical waste has increased primarily due to growth in the number of patients and prescriptions and the use and overproduction of medicines. The increase in unused, expired, and misplaced medicines contributes to medicine shortages, higher percentages of pharmaceuticals waste, and increased medicine disposal costs, and it is a growing concern globally requiring a systemic approach to its resolution .” As found in the research conducted by Alshemari and his colleagues, implementing the Circular Economy model will accomplish sustainability in regards to waste that comes from the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain (PSC). “When considering the application of CE principles to the PSC, the best methods for reducing pharmaceutical waste include reducing, reusing, and recycling disposable instruments and materials.” If the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain adopts measures of Circular Economy, our environment and health will be saved from the dangers of toxic medical waste.
