In Lesser developed countries the issue of waste from humans and animals is still a significant problem. Many times the country does not have to means to develop a proper sewage system and certainly not the means to maintain it which requires high amounts of energy to process the waste. The solution to this problem to stop the idea of a linear relationship between consuming and wasting.
A way to overcome the problem is to use the larvae of the “black soldier fly” (Hermetia illucens), which can feed on human and animal excrements. The larvae have an immense appetite that can be satisfied with the waste of farm animals and more importantly the waste of humans.
This provides A circular economy since the flies can reproduce and feed their offspring while we benefit off of their love for organic matter such as stool. They can also further be used by being dried out and then used as animal feed for fish, livestock, and poultry. This also prevents the overpopulation of the flies and also reduces the need to grow separate crops such as corn and soy for animal feed which take huge amounts of land.
Overall the solution is best suited for lesser developed economies that need a natural way to get rid of thier waste problem that can also help the environment around them.
